La Virginia is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Risaralda in Colombia . La Virginia is part of the metropolitan area Área Metropolitana de Centro Occidente (AMCO), the metropolitan area of Pereira .

La Virginia is located in the Departamento de Risaralda in the Colombian coffee zone ( Eje Cafetero ) 30 km from Pereira at an altitude of 889 m above sea level. NN and has an average annual temperature of about 28 ° C. La Virginia is located at the mouth of the Río Risaralda in the Río Cauca in the Western Cordillera of the Colombian Andes . The municipality borders in the north on Belalcázar in the Departamento de Caldas , in the south on the corregimiento Caimalito of Pereira, in the east on Pereira and Marsella and in the west on Balboa and Santuario .

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the area of today's La Virginia was inhabited by the indigenous peoples of the Ansermas and Apías and was also an Afro-Colombian settlement before the first colonization by white Colombians. Previous names of the place were Sopinga , Nigricia and Bodega . The current place was founded in 1888. La Virginia has had parish status since 1959, and since 1991 the parish has been part of the Pereiras metropolitan area .
