The Pereira Airport ( Spanish officially Aeropuerto Internacional Matecaña ; IATA code : PEI ; ICAO code : SKPE ) is the airport of the Colombian city of Pereira in the department of Risaralda . It is located about five kilometers west of the city center and belongs to the city of Pereira, which is also responsible for operating the building. Flight operations are handled by Aerocivil . The airport is mainly used for domestic traffic, mainly for flights to and from Bogotá . The only two international connections are to Panama and New York .

The idea for the construction of the regional airport - later an important impetus for the development of the coffee zone in Colombia - came from an initiative of enthusiastic civilians from the city of Pereira who managed to motivate the population to actively participate in the project. At the time, this was a unique process for Colombia. The decision for an airport was made on August 18, 1944. The city of Pereira provided four hectares of land and had a runway of 1,800 m in length built in the Matecaña district. The first aircraft, a Douglas DC-3 / C-47 , landed on July 24, 1947. The airport's catchment area has around three million residents.

The passenger terminal was built from 1974 and inaugurated on October 22, 1976. In 1982 it was expanded. Since December 1991 passengers have been able to board via passenger boarding bridges. The freight terminal was built in 1979 and expanded in 1985/86.
