description

When the city of Manizales was founded in 1849, the first thatched wooden church was built on the site of today's cathedral. More churches were built after earthquakes in 1869 and 1897, the latter was built with the creation of the diocese of Manizales in 1900 by Leo XIII. to the cathedral. In one of the three city fires in the 1920s, the cathedral burned down in 1926.

The French architect Julien Polti emerged as the winner of the subsequent competition with a design with neo-Gothic, neo-Romanesque and Byzantine elements. The foundation stone was laid on February 5, 1928, the church was built by the Italian construction company Papio-Bonarda y Compañía, which also built other buildings on site. Due to the necessary imports of many building materials, completion took eleven years. The canopy that covers the main altar of the cathedral was designed by Joachim Santos and created in Italy by the Stuflesser workshop; it came to Colombia in 1948. It is 14 meters high, supported by four golden pillars, has 64 white pictures carved in wood and was put together by Manizaleño Hernando Carvajal. 1951 received the cathedral by Pope Pius XII. the title of a minor basilica . In 1984 it was included on the list of National Monuments of Colombia .

Some of the facade decorations by the Italian sculptor Alideo Tazzioli Fontanini had to be replaced after the earthquake of 1962. The north-west tower also had to be rebuilt by 1990, the new images were created by 1993. The 141 stained glass windows imported from workshops in Italy, France and the Netherlands were created by various artists. Since December 2014, the Manizales Cathedral has permanent exterior lighting. The new organ of the Allen Organ Company from the United States was consecrated in 2015.
