Friedrich Hundt (born May 4, 1807 in Iserlohn ; † July 4, 1887 in Münster ) was a German professional photographer who created important photographic documents on the history of Münster and the Münsterland from 1840 onwards .

Life

Friedrich Hundt learned the button- making trade and emigrated from Iserlohn at the end of the 1820s. In 1833 he acquired the right to live in Münster. In 1834 Hundt married Elisabeth Christine geb. Rennebrink, the daughter of a day laborer, who died in 1837. His second wife was Anna Maria, born in Beckum , in 1837 . Arnemann, the daughter of a wealthy farmer. With her he had two children, only one daughter of whom reached adulthood.

From 1840 Hundt experimented with the Daguerre process, in that year he opened his studio and exhibited his first pictures. In 1842 he was able to produce colored daguerreotypes for the first time , although his prices were below the level in other cities. From 1853, his repertoire also included the production of calotypes using the method of William Henry Fox Talbot .

In 1885 Hundt sold his studio to the Hülswitt brothers, who continued to run it until 1908, after which the photographer W. Roth was the owner.

The order for the official gift from the city of Münster for the wedding of Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm with the British Princess Victoria testifies to Hundt's professional reputation and his social standing . In the years 1857/1858 Hundt produced an album with fourteen 20 cm x 30 cm views of the city of Munster, for which he billed 80 thalers . These pictures are Hundt's oldest surviving photographs.

His main activity, however, remained portrait photography . His clientele included the Munsterland nobility, high presidents , bishops, merchants, privateers , simple officials and citizens. These “business card images” can still be found in large numbers in archives, libraries, museums and especially in private ownership.

Friedrich Hundt himself has a portrait drawing by the painter Fritz Tüshaus and a photograph in the context of a gentlemen's society.

In 1991 the Friedrich Hundt Society was founded in Münster as an association to promote photography. She regularly organizes exhibitions in the Münster City Museum .

The Westphalia picture archive preserves a large number of Hundt portraits.
