Henry Ward Beecher
Henry Ward Beecher (born June 24, 1813 in Litchfield , Connecticut , † March 8, 1887 in Brooklyn , NY ) was a congregational American preacher .
Career
Henry Ward Beecher was born the eighth of thirteen children of Presbyterian theologian Lyman Beecher . One of his sisters was the writer Harriet Beecher Stowe . After graduating, he became a preacher in Indianapolis in 1839 and then in Brooklyn in 1847. In his sermons, which were already published as books during his lifetime, he advocated equal rights for women and the liberation of slaves . In 1875 he was accused by his former friend Theodore Tilton of adultery with his wife Elizabeth Tilton and successfully defended by Austin Abbott . His most famous quote to this day is: "Truths are first clouds, then rain, then harvest and food." (Truths are first [like] clouds, then rain, then harvest and food.)
