Wilhelm Adolf Schmidt (born September 26, 1812 in Berlin , † April 10, 1887 in Jena ) was a German historian .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1831, Wilhelm Adolf Schmidt began studying philology and history at the University of Berlin . His most influential teachers there were August Boeckh and Leopold von Ranke , in whose famous historical exercises he took part. Already 1834 with a thesis on the sources to the incursions of the Gauls to Greece doctorate . First he taught during his probationary year at the Royal Realschule and later at the Joachimsthalschen Gymnasium in Berlin. His work at that time included a. a. with the first Hellenism volume by Johann Gustav Droysen and the sources of the Zonara . In 1840 he completed his habilitation with a study of Greek papyrus documents from the royal library in Berlin . From 1840/41 he taught as a private lecturer - also on the mediation of August Boeckh and Friedrich von Raumer at the Berlin University ; In 1845 he was appointed associate professor.

He taught ancient history as well as German and universal history and continued his studies in the field of epigraphy and papyrology . In 1843, together with Boeckh, Georg Heinrich Pertz , Leopold von Ranke and the Brothers Grimm, he founded the Zeitschrift für Geschichtswwissenschaft , which he published throughout its publication from 1844 to 1848.

As a member of the Württemberger Hof parliamentary group, he was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly from 1848. Because he saw no prospect of promotion in Berlin due to his contemporary history lectures in 1849, which were very well received, Schmidt went to the University of Zurich in 1851 as full professor of history . and nine years later as Droysen's successor to Jena , where he stayed until the end of his life. From 1874 to 1876 he was a member of the Reichstag . In his later historical work, he dealt primarily with recent German history.

In 1874 he became a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
