Walter Baumgartner (theologian)

Walter Baumgartner (born November 24, 1887 in Winterthur ; † January 30, 1970 in Basel ) was a Swiss Protestant Reformed theologian , philologist, philosopher and professor of the Old Testament and Semitic languages ​​at the University of Basel from 1929 to 1958.

Walter Baumgartner was born on November 24, 1887 in Winterthur, Switzerland, and spent his childhood in Zurich . His father was Andreas Baumgartner , professor of English at the Polytechnic in Zurich. From 1906 to 1912 he first studied history at the University of Zurich and later both Semitic languages ​​and classical philology . In 1913 he became a doctor of philosophy . He then studied at the universities of Marburg and Giessen ; In 1916 he received the theological licentiate degree.

At the University of Marburg he was responsible as a lector of the Hebrew language from 1915 , from 1916 private lecturer for Old Testament science and from 1920 associate professor . Baumgartner was a full professor at the University of Giessen from 1928; from 1929 to 1958 he taught the Old Testament and Semitic languages as a full professor at the University of Basel .

Baumgartner was considered a liberal theologian with broad interest and a comparative working method. His focus was on Old Testament prophecy and wisdom, Hebrew and Aramaic philology, mythology, the history of religion and research into fairy tales. His main work were two volumes of the Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament , founded by Ludwig Köhler , which were published in 1953 and 1958.

He died on January 30, 1970 in Basel.
