Louis Joseph Ziercke (born April 9, 1887 in Bad Godesberg ; † February 26, 1945 there ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

The Ziercke family came from Parchim in Mecklenburg . Around 1900 the parents built a house at Brunnenallee 8 in Bad Godesberg. Between 1898 and 1901 Ziercke attended the Royal High School in Bonn. From 1902 to 1907 he was enrolled at the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts . In 1903 Peter Behrens took over the management of the School of Applied Arts and Ziercke took, after pre-school, first the specialist class for decorative painting with Ignaz Wagner (1854-1917). In 1904 he switched from decorative painting to the newly established specialist class for surface and graphic art by Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke . He became a member of the Der Ring association and played a key role in the design of the Ring magazine, which was supported by teachers and students at the Kunstgewerbeschule . In 1907 he attended Moritz Heimann's private painting school in Munich , then in 1907 and 1908 he worked in the architecture office of Peter Behrens in Neubabelsberg and then returned to the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts until 1909. In the summer of 1909 he briefly ran a joint architecture studio in Godesberg with his former partner at the Fritz Kaldenbach School of Applied Arts . From 1910 to 1914 he studied in Berlin, a. a. with Lovis Corinth , and in February 1914 settled again in Godesberg. From 1914 he served as a soldier in World War I until he became unfit for military service in 1916. After the end of the war he worked as a teacher for freehand drawing at the advanced training school in Godesberg and then worked as a painter and commercial artist in Godesberg from 1923 to 1944 . During the inflationary period he created numerous designs for emergency money bills for the city of Godesberg (10 and 25 pfennig values were realized).

From July to October 1944, Ziercke was drafted into the Volkssturm and fell seriously ill there. He finally died in February 1945.
