Levi Spear Burridge (born July 15, 1829 in Painesville ( Ohio ), † November 28, 1887 in Cannes ) was an American-Jewish celebrity dentist .

Life

Levi was born to Samuel Burridge and his wife Hannah, nee Parmly. He studied dentistry at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland and graduated in 1850 as a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery). He studied medicine at the Baltimore College of Physicians and Surgeons (today: University of Maryland School of Medicine ), which he completed in 1851 as an MD (Doctor of Medicine). After two years of practice with his uncle Eleazar Parmly, he traveled to Rome . In 1855 he married Emma Frances Ogden and had a daughter (who died early) and two sons, Lee and Frank. Lee Burridge became an inventor and held over 60 patents, including making a name for himself in developing the typewriter . Levi retired in 1879 and has been commuting between Europe and the United States ever since. Levi died as a result of an accident in Cannes. His remains were transferred to New York and buried in Woodlawn Cemetery , one of the city's most prestigious burial sites. Dental activity

Levi Spear Burridge - along with Thomas W. Evans and Newell Sill Jenkins - was one of the most sought-after US dentists in Europe in the 19th century, practicing mainly in Italy , Austria-Hungary and France . Among other things, he was the dentist of Pope Pius IX. (1792–1878), King of the Two Sicilies Ferdinand II (1810–1859), his wife Maria Theresa of Austria (1816–1867) and (for four years) Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary (Sisi, 1837–1898) . The Rothschild family were not only among his patients, but also among his supporters. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871) he worked as a doctor for the French Red Cross .
