The Brabo fountain in front of the town hall

The Brabo Fountain is a fountain on the Grote Markt in the Belgian city of Antwerp . It was created in 1887 by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux (1852–1908). The bronze sculpture clearly takes up stylistic features of Italian mannerism .

In her presentation she refers to the legend about the founding of Antwerp. It shows the young hero Silvius Brabo as he throws the severed hand of the giant Druon Antigon , whom he had previously defeated in battle, into the Scheldt . The giant had demanded tolls from the passing ships on the banks of the Scheldt. If they couldn't pay the duty, he cut off their right hand. According to tradition, the name of the city comes from this event, the "throwing the hand".

The fountain replaced a freedom tree that stood on the square in front of the town hall until 1882. The ceremonial unveiling of the sculpture took place on August 21, 1887.
