Jef Lambeaux born, Joseph Maria Thomas Lambeaux (* 14. January 1852 in Antwerp , Belgium ; † 5. June 1908 in Brussels , Belgium) was a Belgian sculptor of neo-baroque .

Life

Jef Lambeaux studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he was a student of Joseph Geefs .

He belonged with Piet Verhaert (1852-1908), Alexander Struys (1852-1941) and others to a group of young artists called the Van Beers clique , which was led by Jan van Beers . The group was known for "mischievous and eccentric behavior", so the members occasionally appeared in public in Antwerp in historical costumes. He was also a member of the Société des Vingt , or Les XX for short , an association of Belgian artists promoting new and unconventional art, and the Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique .

During a visit to Italy Lambeaux took a liking to the works of Giovanni Bologna , whose impressions shaped his work. The Art Deco sculptor , Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet (1880–1950), was Lambeaux's pupil in Paris. Other students were Georges Van der Straeten and Jean Gaspar .

Lambeaux presented his first work in 1871 with the title War ( French Guerre ). This was followed by humorous group presentations such as Dancing Children , Sage Guten Morgen , Lucky Number and An Accident (1875). In Paris he made the works of beggars and blind have-nothing . In 1981 he added The Kiss ( Le baiser , now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts , Antwerp), which is described as his masterpiece.

Other notable works are his Brabobrunnen ( La fontaine Brabo , 1886) in Antwerp, The plundering of an eagle's nest ( Le Dénicheur d'Aigles , 1890, now in the Brussels Museum of Ancient Art ), The Rush ( L'Ivresse , 1893), The Triumph der Frau ( Le Triomphe de la Femme , 1901) and The Bitten Faun ( Le Faune mordu , 1901), who caused a sensation at the exhibition Liège International - 1905 .

Inspired by the Flemish Baroque painters Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens , he repeatedly depicted bodies knotted in themselves in different groups. His huge bas-relief Human Passions ( Les Passions humaines , 1886) is made of Carrara marble . His numerous busts include portraits of Hendrik Conscience , Karel Buls and Albert Goblet d'Alviella .

Lambeaux's bas-relief Human Passions was heavily criticized at the Salon Triennale Gent in 1889 . In 1890, L'Art Moderne magazine commented on his work:

“[It's] a bunch of naked and twisted bodies, muscular wrestlers delirious, an absolute and incomparable childish concept. It's at the same time chaotic and vague, bloated and pretentious, pompous and empty. What could have happened if the government had simply bought works of art for 300,000 francs instead of 'passions'? "

- L'Art Moderne, 1890

Catholic newspapers took offense at the scene and wrote that Lambeaux 'work was "animated with the flesh of the devil" and described the pavilion as a "marble brothel".
