Karel Buls
Karel Frans Gommaar (French Charles François Gommaire ) Buls (born October 13, 1837 in Brussels , † July 13, 1914 in Ixelles ) was a Belgian politician.
Buls studied law, became a lawyer, and devoted himself to the cause of public education with great zeal. He became a member and president of the Ligue belge de l'enseignement and wrote: Une excursion scolaire à Londres (Brussels 1872); Vienne en 1873 (1874); La sécularisation de l'enseignement (1876) et al. From 1881 to 1899 he was mayor of Brussels , 1882–1884 and 1886–1894 liberal member of the chamber. He campaigned strongly for the equality of the Dutch language in Belgium.
The Belgian Obediences website names him a well-known Freemason . Buls Bay in Antarctica bears his name in his honor.
