Georges Van der Straeten (born December 21, 1856 in Ghent , Kingdom of Belgium , † 1928 ) was a Belgian sculptor . He also used the name Dargil to sign his work .

Life

Georges Van der Straeten initially worked as a lawyer; from 1882 he was a student of the sculptors Jef Lambeaux and Gustave Kasteleyn. In 1883 he left Ghent and moved to Paris , where he exhibited at the salons of the Société des Artistes Français from 1885 to 1912 . In Paris he befriended the Belgian painters Jan van Beers and Rik Wouters . He received various awards, including a silver medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 ; In 1903 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor .

The paintings by the painter Antoine Watteau inspired the numerous busts of Van der Straeten. His art nouveau bronzes were handcrafted by , among others, the sculptor Emile Pinedo, the Société des Bronzes de Paris and the Éditeur d'art (art publisher) and sculptor Arthur Goldscheider .
