Jan Van Beers (* 1852 in Lier near Antwerp ; † 1927 in Fay-aux-Loges , Loiret department , France) was a Belgian painter. The art critics valued the mastery of his painting art highly and compared him with the masters of old Dutch painting .

Life

Jan Van Beers the Younger was the son of the Flemish poet of the same name, Jan Van Beers (1821–1888). His artistic talent was already evident in his early youth. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and soon became the leader of a group of young artists called the Van Beers clique .

Jan Van Beers came to Paris in 1878 and began working in the studio of his compatriot, the Belgian painter Alfred Stevens (1823–1906). He soon founded his own studio and employed the Polish painter Émile Eisman-Semenowsky as his assistant.

At the Salon in Brussels , where he was represented with two of his works, his picture entitled Le Yacht «La Sirène» provoked a scandal. The two art critics Solvay and De Mons claimed that the picture, which was created with particular precision and attention to detail, was created on the basis of a photograph. Van Beers then suggested that the critics pay them 10,000 Swiss francs for the painting Lily and 20,000 Swiss francs for the painting La Sirène if their allegations were proven to be true, and demanded the same sums of money from them for charity if their allegations were not correct would confirm. On September 3, 1881, an unknown vandal scratched the paint off the siren's face, ruling the dispute in the artist's favor.

The artist's works, including numerous depictions of society women, belonged to the conservative, naturalistic current of painting and enjoyed great popularity among the bourgeois public. He also successfully created advertising posters, consciously orienting himself on the fine painting of the Dutch painters of the 17th century. In Germany the artist was exhibited in the Berlin gallery by Fritz Gurlitt ; his paintings were considered "piquant" in the time of Wilhelmism . Today, up to $ 5,000 is paid for his oil paintings in the art market .
