Eduard von Todesco

Eduard Freiherr von Todesco (born April 1, 1814 in Vienna ; † January 17, 1887 there ) was an Austrian entrepreneur , banker and philanthropist .

He came from a Jewish family that originally bore the name Hirschl . Hermann Todesko (1791–1844) had taken on the name of Todesco or Todesko. Since his Italian business partners had difficulties pronouncing his name, they used to announce him as "Tedesco", ie "the Germans". That was the inspiration for the new family name, which also indicated that the wealthy factory owner had achieved social advancement. From 1848 Eduard von Todesco and his brother Moritz ran the wholesale company Hermann Todesco's Sons and an affiliated private bank. In addition, they had owned the Marienthal textile factory since 1858 . In 1861 he was built by Emperor Franz Joseph I in the knighthood raised to 1869 Baron appointed. Thus he belonged to the so-called Second Society .

Eduard Freiherr von Todesco was married to the one who was born in Brno Sophie Gomperz (born July 22, 1825 in Brno, † July 9, 1895 in Vienna), a sister of the well-known classical philologist Theodor Gomperz . Sophie ran one of the most influential salons of the time in Vienna during her marriage .
