Rupert Ludwig Ferdinand zu Loewenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg (born August 24, 1933 in Palma ; † May 20, 2014 in London ), known in the English-speaking world as Prince Rupert Loewenstein , was a German-British native of the Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg family Banker . From 1968 to 2007 he was the finance manager of the Rolling Stones , turning them into one of the most financially successful rock bands of all time. He was nicknamed "Rupee the Groupie" in the media.

biography

The son of Leopold zu Loewenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg (1903–1974) and his wife Bianca Treuberg (1913–1984) was born in 1933 in Palma de Mallorca. After his parents separated, he grew up in England in 1940, where he went to school in Letchworth Garden City , Hertfordshire . He studied history at Oxford . He worked as a stockbroker in the City of London . In 1963 he and friends bought the Handelsbank Leopold Joseph & Co.

The art dealer Christopher Gibbs introduced Loewenstein to Mick Jagger in 1968 . Jagger was unhappy with the Stones' then manager Allen Klein . Loewenstein began advising Jagger and the Stones on financial matters. He convinced her to leave the UK to save taxes. The band moved to the south of France and now released on their own record label Rolling Stones Records.

1981 Loewenstein left L. Joseph & Co and founded his own financial company Rupert Loewenstein Ltd. He took the best of the show business customers he had won for the bank with him.

Loewenstein's collaboration with the Rolling Stones ended in 2007 after the band turned down his proposal to sell the Rolling Stones brand.

Private life

Loewenstein was married to the ballerina and opera singer Josephine Lowry-Corry since 1957. They had two sons, Rudolf and Konrad, and a daughter, Maria-Theodora (Dora).

In addition to his professional activities, Loewenstein was Grand Inquisitor of the Order of Constantine and President of the British branch of the Sovereign Order of Malta .

In 1985 Loewenstein was the godfather of Mick Jaggers and Jerry Hall's son James, godmother was Anjelica Huston .
