Sophie von Todesco (born July 22, 1825 in Brno , Austrian Empire , † July 9, 1895 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ) was a salonnière of the Vienna Ringstrasse epoch .

Life

Sophie Gomperz came from a respected and wealthy family. She was the daughter of Philipp Josua Feibelman Gomperz (1782-1857) and Henriette Gomperz, née Auspitz (1792-1881). She was the sister of the classical philologist Theodor Gomperz and the large entrepreneurs Max and Julius von Gomperz and the aunt of the philosopher Heinrich Gomperz .

Sophie married the entrepreneur and philanthropist Eduard von Todesco in 1845 and ran a famous salon in his palace . The guests included the politicians Alexander Freiherr von Bach , Friedrich Ferdinand Graf von Beust , Anton Freiherr von Doblhoff-Dier , Anton Ritter von Schmerling , the writers Eduard von Bauernfeld , Franz von Dingelstedt , Ludwig Ganghofer , Friedrich Halm , and the composer Johann Strauss (son) , the industrialist Isidor Mautner and Burgtheater director Heinrich Laube . Since 1892 Hugo von Hofmannsthal was a frequent guest in the Salon Sophie von Todesco.

The couple had four children: Anna , married von Lieben (1847–1900), “Jella” Gabriele (1854–1943), temporarily married to Ludwig Freiherr von Oppenheimer , Hermann (1849–1876) and Franziska “Fanny” (1846–1922 ), married to Baron Henry de Worms (later 1st Baron Pirbright of Pirbright; 1840–1903) since 1864.

Sophie's sister Josephine von Wertheimstein also ran a well-known salon in Vienna.
