Leonhard Atzberger (born June 23, 1854 on the Rimberg, Bodenkirchen , Lower Bavaria, † March 10, 1918 in Munich ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and dogmatist .

After elementary school in Velden Atzberger attended the boys' seminar in Scheyern before he switched to the grammar school in Freising . After graduation in 1874 he studied for a year philosophy at the Lyceum in Freising, then three years theology at the University of Munich . During this time he lived in the Collegium Georgianum . As a student, in the academic year 1877/78 he solved the award task on the doctrine of the Logos of St. Athanasius .

After being ordained a priest on June 29, 1879, he was initially a cooperator in Petting for almost a year , then for two and a half years curate in the Munich parish of St. Johannes Nepomuk. During these years he also continued his studies and received his doctorate on March 5, 1881. theol. During his work as a subdeacon at the Munich Church of St. Michael , he completed his habilitation with another dogma-historical work on the sinfulness of Christ .

Since January 10, 1883, he worked at the University of Munich as a private lecturer . On April 16, 1888 Atzberger was appointed associate professor of dogmatics and apologetics . The position was changed to a full professorship for dogmatics on July 1, 1894, after Alois von Schmied had withdrawn to apologetics.

During his university service he was also dean and senator several times . He devoted himself in particular to eschatology within dogmatics . In 1890 he published his treatise on "The Christian eschatology in the stages of its revelation in the Old and New Testaments", and in 1896 a second on "The history of Christian eschatology in the pre-ICAN era". By 1903 he completed Scheeben's " Handbuch der Dogmatik " with the fourth volume . This volume appeared in three parts (1898, 1901 and 1903). In eschatology in particular, he set his own accents, which earned him the reproach of having moved away from Scheeben's approach. In 1907 his own "Principles of Catholic Dogmatics" appeared.

He also made a name for himself between 1882 and 1902 as a university preacher and, due to his commitment, as a board member of the St. Vincentius Association to support students at the university.

In 1905 he was appointed clergyman of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising , and in 1912 he was appointed papal house prelate . In 1906 he received the IV.
