Petting ( English petting from: to pet "caress") refers to sexual acts between people that include any type of sexual stimulation without having sexual intercourse .

definition

Petting involves the forms of physical contact outside of coitus that induce sexual arousal . If it leads to coitus, it is also called foreplay . The most important practices are kissing and manual and oral stimulation of the erogenous zones, including the primary and secondary sexual characteristics, as well as rubbing them together. Petting is considered the most common form of sexual behavior among adolescents and young adults.

Concept history

In the German edition, The Revolution of Modern Youth ( Revolt of Modern Youth by Ben B. Lindsey and Wainwrigt Evans, approx. 1925), published around 1930, the translators write in the introduction: “… The petting stems from the colleges and universities with coeducation party , that means the Poussiergesellschaft, which gets its name from petting = to stroke. This hides everything up to sexual intimacy, Petting may include any carnality short of fornication , says Henry L. Mencken in Americana 1925. "

The term was adopted from English in the middle of the 20th century in the sense of "sexually arousing physical stimulus games" . Petting actually means "caressing, smooching", to English. to pet "pamper, pamper, caress" and was derived from pet " pampered animal (young)".

Cultural and legal importance

In the United States , petting - as sex without genital, oral, or anal penetration - also has a solid legal meaning to this day. Because while petting is often free from punishment, full sexual intercourse between adolescents, at least one of whom is still of legal age , constitutes a criminal offense of sexual misconduct in many states .
