Pirbright Laboratory
The Pirbright Laboratory is a government research facility that studies farm animal diseases. It is part of the Institute for Animal Health (IAH), which is supported by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). The Pirbright Laboratory is an international reference laboratory for diagnosing illness in emergencies. His research areas include foot and mouth disease and swine vesicular disease (SVD). The American private company Merial Animal Health is also doing research in Pirbright. Their laboratories are also checked and approved by the state.
On Saturday, August 4, 2007, it was announced that foot-and-mouth disease virus discovered on a farm three miles away was similar to the one being studied at Pirbright. A 2002 report by the BBSRC said that some of the laboratories and other facilities in Pirbright were not remotely up to the standard one would expect from a modern biomedical facility.
