Jacqueline Cramer

Jacqueline Marian Cramer (born April 10, 1951 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch environmental scientist and politician. For the Partij van de Arbeid , she was Minister of Construction and Environment of the Netherlands from 2007 to 2010.

Live and act

After graduating from high school, she studied philosophy, botany and biochemistry at the University of Arkansas from 1969 to 1970 , then biology at the University of Amsterdam , where she received her doctorate in 1976.

Cramer worked as a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam from 1976 to 1989, where she headed the department for “Biology and Society” until 1982, then the department for “ Scientific Dynamics”, which is oriented towards the sociology of science. From 1985 to 1987 she was also the chairwoman of the Dutch environmental protection organization Milieudefensie, which belongs to Friends of the Earth . In 1989, Cramer was offered the post of list leader by GroenLinks , which she refused despite earlier support from the alliance.

Until 1995 she worked at the Study Center for Technology and Politics of the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research . From 1990 to 1996 she also held an endowed professorship for environmental protection at the University of Amsterdam before moving to the Catholic University of Brabant , where she was the endowed professor for environmental management until 1999 . In 1999 she founded her own consultancy for sustainability management ( Sustainable Entrepreneurship ). From 1999 to 2005 she was also Professor of Environmental Management at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and then Professor of Sustainable Entrepreneurship at the Copernicus Institute of the University of Utrecht .

Cramer was also a member of Shell Nederland's board of directors and a government-appointed member of the Economic and Social Council of the Netherlands. She was also a member of the supervisory board of the Dutch World Wildlife Fund and the national council for transport, water management and public works as well as the council for environmental and nature research and chair of the platform “Residents and Sustainable Building”.

On February 22, 2007, Cramer was appointed Minister for Housing, Regional Planning and the Environment in the fourth Balkenende cabinet . On February 23, 2010, Cramer resigned from her ministerial office because of the Dutch military engagement in Afghanistan. She is currently the director of the Utrecht Sustainability Institute and is also a professor of sustainability innovations at the University of Utrecht.
