Friedrich Wagner (archaeologist)

Friedrich Wagner (born September 14, 1887 in Neuburg an der Donau ; † June 11, 1963 ) was a German prehistoric scientist . From 1935 to 1953 he headed the Prehistoric State Collection in Munich .

After studying Classical Philology , History and Classical Archeology in Munich and Berlin , he received his doctorate in 1915 under Paul Wolters with the thesis “The Aigis of Athena in Greek Art”. After he had increasingly devoted himself to topics of prehistory since 1911 , he became an intern at the Prehistoric State Collection in 1912 and from 1917 to 1918 assistant to the Roman-Germanic Commission . From 1918 to 1923 he was assistant to Paul Wolters at the Museum for Casts of Classical Works in Munich. Subsequently he worked at the Prehistoric State Collection, whose director he became in 1935. From 1945 to 1948 Friedrich Wagner was retired and worked for the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation ; after that he finally returned to his old position, in 1953 he was retired. At the University of Munich he became titular professor in 1927 and honorary professor of prehistoric archeology in 1935. In 1944/45 he represented the chair holder Hans Zeiss .

In 1959 he received the Bavarian Order of Merit .
