Ludwig Philipp (Portuguese: Dom Luís Filipe Maria Carlos Amélio Fernando Victor Manuel António Lourenço Miguel Rafael Gabriel Gonzaga Xavier Francisco de Assis Bento de Bragança Orleães Sabóia e Saxe-Coburgo-Gotha ) (born March 21, 1887 in Lisbon ; † February 1, 1908 in Lisbon) was Crown Prince of Portugal from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha .

Life

family

He was the eldest son of Charles I of Portugal and his wife Amélie von Orléans . He received a good education. He was an officer and had military training.

Regicide and revolution

He died on February 1, 1908 in Lisbon with his father in an assassination attempt. During the attack, pistol shots were fired at the carriage in which Ludwig Philipp was traveling with his father. The king died immediately, Ludwig Philipp only succumbed to his injuries 20 minutes later. Strictly speaking, he was therefore the Portuguese king (Ludwig II) for 20 minutes, but is generally not listed in the country's king lists. His younger brother Manuel II subsequently became the last monarch to ascend the Portuguese throne .
