Elisabeth von Savoyen-Carignan (Italian Maria Francesca Elisabetta Carlotta Giuseppina ; born April 13, 1800 in Paris , † December 25, 1856 in Bolzano ) was a princess of Savoy and the aunt and mother-in-law of Victor Emanuel II , the first king of the united Italy.

Life

Elisabeth von Savoyen-Carignan was born in Paris in 1800 as the daughter of Charles Emmanuel, Prince of Carignan (1770–1800) and Maria Christina von Sachsen , a granddaughter of Friedrich August II./August III. , born. She had an older brother, Charles Albert , future King of Sardinia.

On May 28, 1820, Elisabeth was married in Prague to the 36-year-old Archduke Rainer Joseph of Austria , viceroy of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto. She was a great support for her husband and took on many patronages, which meant active obligations for her (care homes for small children, orphanages and poor houses, hospitals). Not long before the start of the revolution in Milan in 1848, she and her husband left Lombardy and moved to South Tyrol . There she shared his interest in science and the arts.

Elisabeth survived her husband by almost four years and died on Christmas Day 1856 at the age of 56 in Bolzano . In this city she was buried in the crypt behind the high altar of the Assumption Church.

Honors

The plant genus Elisanthe (Fenzl ex Endl.) Rchb is named after Elisabeth von Savoyen-Carignan . from the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae) and the species large-flowered catchwort ( Silene elisabethae Jan ).
