Charles Emanuel of Savoy-Carignan
Karl Emanuel von Savoyen-Carignan , Italian Carlo Emanuele Ferdinando Giuseppe Luigi Maria di Savoia-Carignano (born October 24, 1770 in Racconigi ; † August 16, 1800 in Paris ) was a Prince of Carignan from the House of Savoy .
Life
Karl Emanuel von Savoyen-Carignan was born to Viktor Amadeus II (1743–1780), Prince of Carignano and his wife Marie Joséphine of Lorraine (1753–1797). He was thus a descendant of Thomas Franz von Savoyen (1596–1656), the progenitor of the Savoy-Carignan line.
On 24 October 1797 he married in Augsburg Maria Christina of Saxony (1770-1851), daughter of the Saxon Duke Charles of Saxony (1733-1796) , his character-a son of the Saxon Elector Augustus III . Just two days later, however, the young couple left for Turin , where they arrived on November 20, 1797 and initially lived in the Castello di Racconigi, the residential palace of the Princes of Carignan.
Karl Emanuel had initially fought against the French in the First Coalition War. But already in 1798 the French occupiers forced him to give up his rule, and in the following years he joined them, giving up his rights to the throne. Soon he and his family were brought to France by French dragoons . In Paris, the small family lived in the Rue du Mail in Chaillot , closely guarded by the French police, but where Karl Emanuel soon died.
He was buried in the basilica of Superga not far from Turin. The short marriage with Maria Christina von Sachsen resulted in two children. Due to the family ties, some of his children were brought up in Dresden . However, Maria Christina married the French prince Jules Maximilien Thibault de Montléart (1787-1865) in 1810, from whose relationship further descendants emerged.
