Ernst Karl Felix Maria Rainer Gottfried Cyriak of Austria (born August 8, 1824 in Milan , † April 4, 1899 in Arco ) from the House of Habsburg-Lothringen was an Archduke of Austria and an Imperial Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal .

Life

Ernst was a son of Archduke Rainer (1783-1853), Viceroy of Lombardy from his marriage to Maria Elisabeth (1800-1856), daughter of Prince Karl Emanuel of Savoy-Carignan . On his father's side, he was a grandson of Emperor Leopold II.

From 1845 onwards, on the recommendation of Field Marshal Radetzky, he was the owner of Infantry Regiment No. 48, and in 1847 Ernst became Major General of the Austrian Army and fought against Giuseppe Garibaldi's troops in Italy . On July 31, 1848 he achieved a great success on the mountain of Tassano and Garibaldi had to retreat to the neutral San Marino and start negotiations, as a result of which the Garibaldi associations had to be dissolved. Garibaldi fled and his soldiers surrendered. Ernst advanced into San Marino and disarmed the troops. Ernst was awarded the Grand Cross of the Leopold Order and promoted to Field Marshal Lieutenant .

Since 1858 Ernst was in command of the 11th Army Corps in Budapest, and later of the 3rd Army Corps in Carinthia and Carniola. Ernst took part in the battle of Königgrätz and was subsequently the commanding general in Styria, Carinthia and Carniola. After he was appointed general of the cavalry in 1867 , he retired into private life the following year. He lived partly with his brother Rainer's family, partly in the so-called “Princely House” at the grandfather in Arco. He died there in 1898 of pneumonia. Ernst was buried in the Ferdinand's crypt of the Capuchin Crypt in Vienna .

Connection and offspring

Ernst was in a connection Laura Skublics de Velike et Bessenyö (1826-1865). She comes from the Hungarian aristocracy and was married to Ignac Csendheli since 1843. She had two daughters from her marriage, Franziska and Luiza. The marriage was unhappy, so in 1854 Laura left her husband and daughters. The marriage was terminated in 1856. In Budapest she met Archduke Ernst and they entered into a relationship that both of them viewed as a marriage. A marriage - as is sometimes claimed - on April 26, 1858 in Laibach did not take place. The marriage certificate presented in the inheritance proceedings 1900–1902 after the death of Archduke Ernst was a forgery. Laura was known as the Baroness von Wallburg and her children were also known as such, but there was no formal award of this title. In 1909 the Austrian Minister of the Interior decreed that the von Wallburg family had to take their mother's maiden name. Laura died of uterine cancer in Vienna in 1865.

Archduke Ernst and Laura Skublics had the following children:

  • Laura von Wallburg (1858–1901)
  • Ernst von Wallburg (1859–1920)
⚭ 1894 Maria Juliana Schaden (1863–1948)
  • Heinrich von Wallburg (1861–1888)
  • Clothilde von Wallburg (1863–1953)
⚭ 1. 1884 Sedul Pegger (1843–1891)
⚭ 2. 1898 Eugen Szimic Edler von Majdangrad (1846–?)
