After the February Revolution of 1848 the couple d'Orléans went to England , then to Spain , where they later resided in Seville . In 1859 her husband was appointed captain general of the Spanish army and infante of Spain. At the beginning of July 1868, the Spanish government discovered a conspiracy that was widespread, especially among senior army officers. The conspirators sought the dethronement of Queen Isabella II and wanted to bring the Duke of Montpensier to the Spanish throne. The duke was expelled from Spain. After resigning his Spanish titles and dignities, he obeyed orders, but returned to Seville after the September 1868 Lisbon Revolution. The hope that her husband will now be enthroned, however, did not come true for Luisa Ferdinanda, since he was so unpopular with the people that he failed twice in the Cortes elections in 1870. He also had the influence of Napoléon III. against himself who did not want an Orléans king in Spain. Because of his ambitious intrigues he got into an argument with Heinrich von Bourbon, the brother-in-law or cousin of Queen Isabella II, and shot him in a duel on March 12, 1870. When the king was elected on November 16, 1870, he received only 27 votes. He left Spain and returned to France in 1871, where he was reconciled with Queen Isabella, his sister-in-law. After her nephew Alfons XII. After becoming King of Spain, Luisa Fernanda and her husband returned to Sanlúcar de Barrameda . Both were buried in the Pantheon of the Infants of the Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial .
