Georges Layek

Georges Layek (born April 3, 1922 in Aleppo , Syria ; † April 15, 1983 ibid) was the Armenian Catholic Archbishop of Aleppo .

Life

Georges Layek was ordained a priest on December 25, 1945 . On August 13, 1959, the Armenian Catholic Synod of Bishops elected him Archbishop of Aleppo. This election was confirmed by the Holy See on August 26, 1959 . The episcopal ordination took place on October 25, 1959 by the Patriarch of Cilicia Archbishop Iknadios Bedros XVI. Batanian , he was assisted by the co-consecrators Lorenz Sahag Koguian OM , titular bishop of Comana Armeniae , and Raphaël Bayan ICPB , titular bishop of Taua and coadjutor bishop of Iskanderiya in Egypt .

Archbishop Layek was a council father and took part in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). During his stay in North America in 1965 he laid the foundation stone for the first parish of the Armenian Catholic Church in Montréal .
