Friedrich August Wiedeburg

Friedrich August Wiedeburg (born April 15, 1751 in Querum , † August 13, 1815 in Helmstedt ) was a German educator and philologist.

Life

Friedrich August Wiedeburg was a grandson of the professor of theology and mathematics Christoph Tobias Wiedeburg (1647-1717), who taught at the University of Helmstedt .

He visited the Anna-Sophianeum in Schöningen and then went to study theology at the University of Helmstedt in 1771 and from there to the University of Jena . After receiving his doctorate in 1775, he held lectures on Latin and Greek writers as an associate professor of philosophy in Jena.

When the rector of the Helmstedt city school, Anton August Heinrich Lichtenstein , was appointed vice rector of the Hamburg Johanneum in 1777 , Friedrich August Wiedeburg applied for the position of rector and was introduced to this position in 1778 by the general superintendent Johann Kaspar Velthusen . In the same year he also applied for an extraordinary professorship in philosophy at the University of Helmstedt. He expressed to Minister Julius Justus von Floegen that he wanted to set up a “philological institute” which “... could be all the more useful if those members who decided to be future school teachers were given the opportunity to do so in the local school Attending classes and giving classes yourself ”. At the end of 1778 he was not only appointed associate professor, the school system was also redesigned according to his plan: the five-class city school was divided into two institutions; the three lowest classes continued to exist solely as a city school, in which, in addition to knowledge of bourgeois life, the beginnings of Latin were taught; the top two classes were transformed into a school of scholars , the pedagogy , which was only intended for those students who wanted to study. This pedagogy was combined with a philological seminar, which it served as a training school, under a director.

On September 29, 1779, the philological-pedagogical institute for the training of highly qualified teachers was opened under the direction of Friedrich August Wiedeburg. In addition to the actual school sciences, the curriculum included philosophy , education and encyclopedic knowledge of all other sciences. The training was expanded to include pedagogy , methodology and the classical writers, which he gave in free lectures for the seminarians. The students of the pedagogy were able to pass through the institution in six to eight years; They had to be eleven to twelve years old at the time of admission and have some knowledge of Latin. Foreign students could live on the pedagogy itself or in the city under the supervision of the teachers. A commission appointed by Duke Charles I was responsible for the external affairs of the institute .

From 1779 to 1810, 82 seminarians taught at the pedagogy, many of whom later found excellent positions: Dietrich Joachim Theodor Cunze (1760–1822), Rector of the Anna-Sophianeum in Schöningen ; Georg Anton Christoph Scheffler (1762–1825), director of the Martino-Katharineum Braunschweig ; the theologian Julius August Ludwig Wegscheider (1771–1849); Johann Heinrich Philipp Seidenstücker (1765–1817) Rector of the Archigymnasium in Soest; Heinrich Kunhardt (1772–1844), Vice Rector of the Katharineum in Lübeck ; Wilhelm Gesenius (1786–1842), professor at the University of Halle and one of the most important scholars of the Semitic languages, especially Hebrew ; Karl Benedikt Hase (1780–1864), President of the École des langues orientales vivantes ; Friedrich Reinhard Ricklefs (1769–1827), Rector at the Old High School in Oldenburg .

In 1783 Friedrich August Wiedeburg became a full professor at the University of Helmstedt and followed in 1793 Johann Christian Wernsdorf (1723–1793) as professor of rhetoric and poetry.

Friedrich August Wiedeburg's academic lectures were closely related to his work in the seminar; he read about logic and metaphysics , psychology and pedagogy , as well as about the classic school writers, most of whom he also had covered in seminars. But he also attached great importance to maintaining his mother tongue, which he did not neglect in class either.

The University of Helmstedt was closed by order of King Jérôme Bonaparte in December 1809 at the end of the winter semester 1809/1810 in May 1810, this also affected the institute founded by Friedrich August Wiedeburg, which was converted into a grammar school (today: grammar school Julianum ), whose director he was until his death. Students at the Helmstedt grammar school were the later church historian Ernst Henke (1804–1872) and Heinrich Ludolf Ahrens (1809–1881), director of the Georgianum grammar school in Lingen.

Friedrich August Wiedeburg was married to Sophie (* unknown; † 1804), née Rücker, daughter of a country clergyman from Weimar. Together they had two daughters and three sons; of these are known by name:

  • Justus Theodor Wiedeburg (born October 6, 1782; † February 2, 1822), successor to his father as director of the Helmstedt high school;
  • Johann Christoph Theodor Wiedeburg (* 1786; † April 13, 1805), law student;
  • Karl Albrecht Wiedeburg (born October 9, 1788; † January 12, 1812), teaching at the pedagogy in Helmstedt.
