timeline

The pastor Werner Leidenfrost (1614–1673) was vice rector of the Latin school for eleven years from around 1640
The
Anna-Sophianeum Latin School , donated by Duchess Anna Sophia and redesigned in baroque style, is now the municipal museum of local history

In the middle of the Thirty Years' War , the Dowager Duchess of Brunswick Anna Sophia von Brandenburg acquired the “Markt 33” building in 1638, today's museum of local history, in order to set up a Latin school there. School operations began at Easter 1640. From 1717 to 1747 the school was headed by Sigismund Andreas Cuno and the vice-principal Johann Friedrich Nolte .

On November 5, 1808, the grammar school under the direction of Dietrich Joachim Theodor Cunze , also called "Latin" or "Princely School", was abolished by a decree of the King of Westphalia, Jérôme, Napoleon's brother. The school was continued as a city boys' school, but a higher education could only be achieved again in 1842.

From 1842 "secondary classes" were set up at the boys 'and girls' school, in which qualified pupils received additional lessons in Latin, English and French for several hours a week. From 1883 these classes were also called "Selekta". The “secondary classes” or “Selekta” were gradually separated from the first boys' bourgeois school and combined into an independent school branch under the name “Progymnasium” or “Realgymnasium”.

At Easter 1890 a secondary school branch was opened. The high school branch comprised the classes sixth, fifth and fourth. It should enable students to transition to the tertia of the Helmstedt high school .

These lessons of the so-called Progymnasium took place from 1890 to 1882 in the rooms of the town's community schools. From 1892 to 1903 this branch of the school was located in rented rooms in the house of Dr. Heinrich-Jasper-Str. 9, and from 1903 to 1912 on the 1st floor of the “Red Building” on the corner of Schulstrasse / Schützenbahn. In 1912 the school received its own building in the Schützenbahn, which is now used as a primary school. The school is now called "Städtische Realschule".

On September 1, 1910, the school got its own director, Dr Heinrich Hamel, after the school had been managed by the director of the community schools until then. On October 1, 1910, the Ducal High School Commission became the superior authority. This is seen as the actual founding date of the school.

From 1911 to 1913 there was a gradual expansion to a six-class secondary school . From 1913 the school comprised classes from sixth to prima .

At Easter 1914, four students left the six-class institution after passing their exams. From 1926 to 1928 an upper level was built. In March 1928, eight boys and one girl took their Abitur examination for the first time in Schöningen.

In 1932 the upper level was dismantled again, the last Abitur examination took place in 1934, but the upper level was rebuilt in 1937. Since 1938 the school has been known as the “Municipal High School”. The first Abitur examination after the reintroduction of the upper school took place in 1939.

In 1955, the high schools were renamed to grammar schools. In honor of the founder of the "High School", Markt 33, the Schöninger Gymnasium has been called the Anna-Sophianeum Gymnasium since 1956 .

The Anna-Sophianeum now has around 800–1000 students.
