Podophyllin

May apple ( Podophyllum peltatum )

Podophyllin is a hygroscopic powder, which is obtained from the rhizome of the genus Fußblatt ( syn .: May apple) with the species Podophyllum peltatum and Podophyllum hexandrum from the family of the sour thorn family ( Berberidaceae ).

The drug contains peltatins , the biologically inactive picropodophylline and the spindle poison podophyllotoxin , which is also used as a cytostatic .

It used to be present in “natural” laxatives , but today it is no longer allowed to be used in this indication . It should also no longer be used for the treatment of genital warts , as anecdotal reports give rise to speculation about the occasional malignant degeneration of genital warts in connection with the introduction of podophyllin therapy in the 1940s.
