He spent the following three years as a tutor with his future father-in-law Georg Ernst Meyer. He was then employed as a deacon in Hameln , in 1770 he went to London to become chaplain and preacher at the court orchestra there. He married Elise Margarethe Meyer in 1772. He stayed in London for only three years, because in 1773 he became pastor and superintendent in Gifhorn .

Two years later, on April 4, 1775, the University of Göttingen awarded him the degree of theological doctor , and in the same year he accepted a position as a full theology professor at the University of Kiel to where he was rector also 1777/1778. After teaching in Helmstedt for nine years, he went on to the University of Rostock , where, in addition to a professorship and rectorate, he also held a position as senior councilor and superintendent. In 1791 he went to Stade as general superintendent for Bremen-Verden and died there on April 13, 1814 at the age of 73.
