Flensburg mechanical engineering institute Johannsen & Sörensen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Flensburg mechanical engineering institute Johannsen & Sörensen was a shipyard founded in 1905 in Flensburg .

history

The company was founded in 1905 as Johannsen & Sörensen and initially mainly produced mineral water machines. After moving to Flensburg Neustadt, a new department at Johannsen & Sörensen began repairing ships in 1934.

In the course of the Second World War , another new facility was built in front of the power station at Flensburg's outer harbor, which was intended exclusively for ship repairs. The new part of the company started its work in the spring of 1943 and was badly affected by one of the first air raids on Flensburg in May 1943 . In mid-1944 Johannsen & Sörensen launched a 500-ton floating dock built in the free port .

After the end of the war, ship repair operations were resumed and shortly afterwards the construction of new fishing boats began . Starting in 1949, two Bauhellinge were created in order to be able to build small coasters with a dead weight of around 425 tons as part of the Potsdam program . At that time it was not yet possible to build larger ships. The construction of a third larger slipway soon followed, on which ships larger than Potsdam were built. Although the shipyard's ships were highly regarded, Johannsen & Sörensen got into financial difficulties as early as 1953/54 and had to close.

New buildings in the shipyard

In total, a floating dock, three fishing cutters and at least twelve cargo ships were built at the Flensburger Maschinenbau-Anstalt, eight 425-tonne Weselmann-Kümos , one 670-tonner, two 890-tonne and one ship with 1150 cargo-tons.
