Weselmann original design

A group of small German coasters built in the late 1940s and in the first half of the 1950s is summarized under the names Weselmann-Kümo or Type Weselmann . The ships, which were all based on a common basic design, were built by a number of shipyards and formed the basis of the German coastal shipping fleet after the end of the Second World War. They were also known under the names Weselmänner , Volkswagen der Kümos or Kleines coaster , the last term also including comparable post-war newbuildings with independent constructions.

history

The German coastal fleet was largely lost after the end of World War II . All German ships still in existence at the time had to be delivered to the Allies or placed under their control, and the construction of new ships was completely prohibited until 1948. From 1947/48 coasters were allowed to be built again, the length of which between the perpendiculars was initially limited to a maximum of 33.49 m (110 feet) due to Control Council Directive 37.

In order to be able to operate coastal shipping again, the Küstenschiff working group was founded in 1947, to which the Maierform company , the Hanseatic Engineering Association and the engineers Beeck, Lembcke and Weselmann belonged. In cooperation with the Association of German Coasters , a working group chaired by the Hamburg shipbuilder Adolf Weselmann developed several basic designs for suitable full-deckers, quarter-deckers and protective deckers, with which captains could replace their ships lost through reparation or war. Because as many ships as possible were to be built with the four million marks available at the time, the choice fell on Weselmann's full-decker design, the construction costs of which were the cheapest.

The Jan-Dirk on the Kiel Canal

Initially 13 ships were commissioned, but later a total of 71 ships were built. The first strict restrictions imposed by the Allies were only met by the Paul delivered on November 28, 1949 by the W. Holst shipyard . The conditions were gradually lifted until 1951. The Kümos of this first post-war period mostly had a measurement of around 299  gross register tons (GRT) with a load capacity of 400 to 650 tons.

Today in Germany two of these small coasters are still in largely unchanged condition as museum ships, the Jan-Dirk , which is based on the Weselmann design, and the Greundiek , whose construction features features of contemporary fish steamers. In addition, there are individual - mostly heavily modified - units in motion.

technology

The ships have a deckhouse arranged aft above the engine room and a single cargo hold arranged amidships of largely unobstructed form with little undercutting and a raised foredeck. The hatch of the hold is closed with wooden hatch covers and tarpaulins . During construction, the ships were given two simple cargo booms that were arranged in front of and behind the hold. The load-bearing capacity of the 33.49-meter-long and 7.5-meter-wide Paul was 350 tons, with the later Weselmen having significantly greater load-bearing capacities.

The drive of the series consisted of a four-stroke diesel engine , which allowed a speed of eight to nine knots. A wide variety of engine models were used.
