Messier 58 (also known as NGC 4579 ) is a 9.6 mag bright bar-spiral galaxy with an area of 6.0 '× 4.8' in the constellation Virgo . Most sources assume that M58 is a bar-spiral galaxy of type SBb in the Hubble sequence . Messier 58 was discovered on April 15, 1779 by the French astronomer Charles Messier .
