Danny Way (born April 15, 1974 in Portland , Oregon ) is an American professional skateboarder . In 2005 he became the first skateboarder to jump over the Great Wall of China without motorized aids .

Life

At 16, Way was sponsored by a company called H-Street , which he soon left to join Blind , which he left a year later to start his own company with H-Street co-founder Mike Ternasky, called Plan B. to bring into being. Way was named Skater of the Year in Thrasher Magazine in 1991 . A series of videos were then produced until he broke his neck in a surfing accident and had to sit out for a year.

In 1995 he got back to the sport and won the Tampa Pro Vert Competition , two years later he also broke the world record for the highest jump on a skateboard. Between 1999 and 2002 Way had to undergo several operations (five knee and two shoulder operations), but all of them were successful. Then he constructed the first megaramp , in which he also set another record of 5.6 m in height.

On June 19, 2003, he set further records on the second reconstruction of the ramp, including the highest Christ Air , highest McTwist and highest Fast Plant . The video footage appeared on the well-selling DC video . At the sixth Transworld Skateboarding Awards , he won the title for best vert-style athlete. In 2004 he won the first Big Air Contest at the X-Games in Los Angeles , where he also broke records again (new distance record ). In the same year he also received the title for Skateboarder of the Year from Thrasher Magazine for the second time .

On June 9, 2005, he was the first person to jump over the Great Wall of China without a motorized aid, i.e. only with his skateboard. A year later he also won gold again at the X-Games in the Big Air discipline by jumping over a 70-foot-long pit (gap), the maneuver was rounded off with a backflip .

At the 14th X-Games in 2008, Danny Way hit the edge of the quarter pipe with both shins . Although he could only hobble off the ramp with the help of a few minutes later, he jumped the planned trick and took second place.

Danny Way has long been sponsored by DC Shoes , which his brother co-founded. That's why he gets his own pro model almost every year, which is sold worldwide.

He can also be found in the video games of EA Black Box Skate, Skate 2 and Skate 3 as a (also playable) character.
