Heinrich I of Assel

Heinrich I. von Assel (also: Aslo ; † April 15, 1107 in Magdeburg ) was a bishop of Paderborn and from 1102 to 1107 Archbishop of Magdeburg.

Life

Heinrich was first canon in Hildesheim . In 1084 he was appointed bishop of Paderborn by the rival king Hermann von Salm . He was elected bishop by the Paderborn Cathedral Chapter in 1084 and confirmed in office by the Pope. Heinrich II. Von Werl received the Paderborn diocese from Heinrich IV. At the gates of Rome . Heinrich von Assel could not assert himself against him and was expelled.

Heinrich therefore sought refuge in Magdeburg and found a friendly welcome here in the cathedral chapter . After Archbishop Hartwig died in 1102, the cathedral chapter elected him archbishop almost against his will due to the vacancy that had occurred. He stayed that way at first, although Emperor Henry IV was very angry about it. Henry IV finally deposed the archbishop, who then withdrew to his family estates. When the emperor's son Heinrich V rebelled against his father in 1105 and seized the government, the papal legate, Bishop Gebhard von Costnitz, reinstated Archbishop Heinrich.

After he had made a trip to Rome on behalf of the young king to invite Pope Paschal II to the Reichstag in Augsburg, he now turned his concern to the affairs of the archbishopric.

Heinrich left the fame of a peaceful, just and learned man for his time, whose early death was widely regretted. His body was buried in the south transept of the Marienkirche of the monastery of Our Lady .
