Poppo from Paderborn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Poppo von Paderborn († November 28, 1083 ) had been Bishop of Paderborn since 1076 .

Poppo's descent from the von Holte family is controversial. The more recent research is more based on a Franconian origin. Possibly he came from the family of the Counts von Henneberg .

Poppo was provost of the cathedral in Bamberg . It is possible that he was a canon in Hildesheim . Although King Henry IV. In 1076 by Pope Gregory VII. Averted had he appointed Poppo bishop. What attitude Poppo took in the investiture controversy is unclear because of the poor sources; however, the bishop appointed by King Henry seems to have changed to Gregory's side. The fact that he accepted the Gregorian-minded Bishop Altmann, who was expelled from Passau , in Paderborn speaks for a pro-papal stance . In 1081 he also took part in the peace negotiations in Kaufungen on the part of the anti-royal Saxons with Heinrich IV. Nevertheless, Poppo had apparently retained a certain leeway. So he probably did not choose Rudolf von Rheinfelden as the opposing king. Nor did the king attempt to remove Poppo from his office. It remains unclear whether he supported the rival king Hermann von Salm, who was elected in 1081 .

Inside his diocese, Poppo relied primarily on the monasteries. Relations with the neighboring imperial abbey Corvey , which was independent of the bishop, improved during his tenure.

Poppo is buried in Abdinghof Monastery .
