Imad (bishop)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Imad , also Immad ( old high German: the all-embracing noble ; * around 1000; † February 3, 1076 in Paderborn ) was bishop of Paderborn from 1051 to 1076 .

According to his own documents and the vita of his predecessor, Bishop Meinwerk, Imad was a son of his sister. Which sister it is is unclear. As a rule, it is assumed that his parents were Liutger or Liudger (around 950-26 February 1011; Count in Westfalengau ; younger son of Duke Hermann Billung of Saxony) and Emma , who was later revered as a local saint . Emma is mentioned as sister to Bishop Meinwerk by Adam von Bremen , but not in his vita or in the necrolog of the Abdinghof monastery donated by Meinwerk. Presumably Emma von Lesum was only a half-sister of Meinwerk and also not the mother of Bishop Imad. Of the two sisters known from Bishop Meinwerk's life, only Glismod comes into consideration as the mother of Bishop Imad. She was married to a Bavarian nobleman who has not yet been clearly identified. The literature discusses Margrave Adalbert of Austria, a Count Reding or a Count Ozi I. as a man of Glismod and possible father of Bishop Imad.

In 1051 he succeeded Rudolf von Büren as Bishop of Paderborn. Since then, the “noble free Herr von Itter” Widherold, son of the Esikonen Count Reinward, has been in his entourage .

He sponsored the cathedral school founded by Meinwerk. In 1058 he donated an animal enclosure to the Twiste (?) Monastery.

After the cathedral burned down in 1058 , he had it rebuilt and consecrated it in 1068. As compensation for the conflagration, the diocese of Paderborn got a forest back on April 7, 1059 and a farm was given.

Although he was with Emperor Heinrich III. and King Henry IV was friends, he let himself be drawn into the uprising of the Saxons against the king in 1073.

He is the founder of the world-famous Imad Madonna for the cathedral. After his death he was buried under the west tower of the cathedral that he had built. His grave was found in 1924.
