Billy DeBeck
William Morgan "Billy" DeBeck (born April 15, 1890 in Chicago , Illinois , † November 11, 1942 in New York , New York ) was an American comic artist and author . He became known as the creator of the Barney Google comic strip , which has been published since 1919.
Life
Billy DeBeck studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and then worked for various newspapers and magazines. In 1914 he was able to publish his first comics with the Chicago Herald . After the Hearst Corporation took over the Chicago Herald , DeBeck moved to the Examiner , where he also drew for the sports side, among other things. The first strip by Barney Google appeared on June 17, 1919, followed by the first Sunday page on March 21, 1920. The series experienced a surge in popularity when DeBeck provided the title hero with the racehorse “Spark Plug”, resulting in a flood of merchandising products resulted in. After DeBeck's death in November 1942, his assistant Fred Lasswell took over the strip.
