The Evangelical village church in Rinnthal is the best known and most important classical church building in the Palatinate .
Building history
In 1827 the municipality of Rinnthal applied for a new village church to be built, as the medieval wooden church had become dilapidated and too small.
The first plans of building inspector Flörchinger of the Landau / Pfalz building inspection were rejected by the district building authority. In particular, the community's desire for a beautiful building in the style of classicism attracted attention. The church was then built according to plans by the architect Joseph Daniel Ohlmüller (1791–1839) under the strong influence of the Bavarian court architect Leo von Klenze . August von Voit (1801–1870) carried out the interior work . The construction period lasted from 1831 to 1834.
The church was supposed to be a model building for a medium-sized country church in the Palatinate, but found no imitators there and remained the only one of its kind.
architecture
The light-plastered church, structured with flat pilasters, is 40 meters long, 15 meters wide and 40 meters high with the tower. A portico with four Ionic columns and a triangular pediment is presented to the facade . Behind her rises from the roof a two-storey tower on a square floor plan with a gallery around the bell chamber.
The church is a hall building with a small round apse that opens behind an arcade supported on two flat pilasters . The interior of the church is about 12 meters high. The simple interior is brightly plastered and covered with a flat coffered ceiling and has a circumferential gallery on Tuscan columns . In the middle of the apse is the magnificent pulpit, which is distinguished by a canopy resting on two pillars . There is a simple altar table in front of the pulpit.
The organ from 1826 stands on the south pore. The equipment from the time it was built has been completely preserved.
