Maurice Gene Schleicher (* 17th July 1937 in Walnutport , Pennsylvania ; † 15. April 2004 in Modesto , California ) was an American American football poker players and scout . He played as a defensive end and linebacker with the Chicago Cardinals and the Los Angeles / San Diego Chargers in the National Football League (NFL) and in the American Football League (AFL).
Player career
College career
Maury Schleicher grew up in Slatington , where he also attended high school . From 1956 to 1958 he studied at Pennsylvania State University and played for their football team , the Penn State Nittany Lions , in various positions, where he was mainly used as a fullback and defensive end. In 1958 he was able to move into the Liberty Bowl with his team . The game against the University of Alabama could be won 7-0. In the same year he was elected to the state and league selection, and named All-American . In 1959, he played a selection game for college football players in the Senior Bowl . He has received several awards from his college for his athletic achievements .
Professional career
Maurice Schleicher was founded in 1959 by the Chicago Cardinals in the fifth round at the 50th spot drafted . The Chicago team paid him an annual salary of US $ 10,000 and a hand money of US $ 1,500. After a playing year in the NFL, Schleicher moved to the newly founded AFL for the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers were able to establish themselves immediately as a top team in the league under the guidance of Head Coach Sid Gillman . Jack Kemp , quarterback for the Chargers, managed to lead the team into the AFL final in 1960 , where they lost to the Houston Oilers with 24:16. After a year of play in Los Angeles , the Chargers moved to San Diego . Schleicher was able to qualify with his team again for the AFL final, but had to accept another defeat against the Oilers. After another season in San Diego, Maury Schleicher moved to the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the Toronto Argonauts . After the 1963 season, he ended his career.
After the career
In the 1965 season, Maury Schleicher returned to football and was assistant coach of Al Davis with the Oakland Raiders . After this game round he worked as a scout for the Raiders.
