Juliette Atkinson
Juliette Paxton Atkinson (born April 15, 1873 in Rahway , New Jersey , † January 12, 1944 in Lawrenceville , Illinois ) was an American tennis player .
biography
Atkinson was the daughter of a New York physicist. She won the women's competition of the US tennis championships in 1895, 1897 and 1898 and was also in the final in 1896. In doubles she was successful in the same championships in 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1901 and 1902. Together with her sister Kathleen , she won in 1901 and 1902.
Before the Williams sisters met in the semifinals of the US Open in 2001, the two Atkinsons were the first siblings to meet in the semifinals of the individual competition. In mixed, Juliette Atkinson was able to triumph with her compatriot Edwin Fischer in 1894, 1895 and 1896 .
In 1918 she married the politician George B. Buxton; their marriage remained childless. Juliette Atkinson was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1974.
