Carl Leberecht Messow (also Karl Leberecht Messow ) (born April 15, 1759 in Obersdorf near Frankfurt (Oder) , † November 12, 1825 in Biederitz near Magdeburg ) was a German Protestant clergyman.

Life

Carl Leberecht Messow was born as the son of the preacher Johann Gottfried Messow.

In 1777 he began his three-year theology course at the University of Halle . In 1783 he received from Major General Heinrich Gottlob von Braun appointment as chaplain at the Infantry Regiment "Graf Lottum" in Berlin, on this point remained Carl Leberecht Messow to 1794, then he became pastor in Biederitz. In 1797/98 he had a new rectory built, which still exists today.

In August 1801, smallpox was rampant in Biederitz and 15 children died. Carl Leberecht Messow had his children vaccinated with the newly discovered cowpox , which prevented them from becoming infected.

In 1811 he was appointed superintendent and school inspector of the schools in Burg , Parchau , Schartau , Niegripp , Lostau , Hohenwarthe , Gerwisch , Detershagen , Schermen , Woltersdorf , Körbelitz and Biederitz. He was committed to the education of children and young people and was able to win Christian Gottfried Neubauer as a teacher for the Biederitz school in 1811; He sent this to the Görlitz Model School for a month. Together with Christian Gottfried Neubauer, Carl Leberecht Messow reformed the Biederitzer School so successfully that it became the respected model school in the area; Teachers came from Magdeburg to Genthin to find out about the important school successes and to learn.

In 1812 he founded a singing choir in Biederitz, although it is unknown how long it existed and which successor choirs were created, although it is assumed that there has always been a choir in Biederitz since then. Today the place has the Biederitzer Kantorei as a choir .

When Magdeburg was still occupied by the French, on April 10, 1814, Carl Leberecht Messow, in his capacity as field preacher, was ordered to hold a field service in front of the assembled blockade corps on the right bank of the Elbe on the Heyrothsberger Sandberge , for which the regiments there were drawn together.

In the spring of 1815, he and Christian Gottfried Neubauer set up a gymnastics course for young people in the Mühlberge von Biederitz, following suggestions from the gymnastics movement around Friedrich Ludwig Jahn and based on his model, where Carl Friedrich Koch (1802–1870 ), Promoter of early gymnastics in Magdeburg, performed his exercises.
