Île de Brescou , also known as Île de Fort Brescou , is a small island in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of the municipality of Agde in the Hérault department in southern France .
The island is about 1500 meters from Cap d'Agde . It is the only island in the Languedoc-Roussillon region .
The island only covers an area of 0.5 hectares and is surrounded by rugged rocks.
Île de Brescou is dominated by a historical defensive system, the Fort de Brescou , which was built there around 1600 and is now only visited by tourists .
There is an unmanned lighthouse on the south coast of the island .
