Bill Aitken (born April 15, 1947 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Conservative Party .

Aitken attended Allan Glen's School in Glasgow and then worked in insurance. Between 1976 and 1996 Aitken was a Conservative Councilor of Glasgow, from 1980 to 1984 and from 1992 to 1996 opposition leader. In 1993 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Glasgow.

In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 Aitken ran for the constituency of Glasgow Anniesland , but could not prevail against the later First Minister Donald Dewar of the Labor Party and the candidate of the SNP . Due to the election result, Aitken received the only mandate on the regional electoral list for the Conservative Party in the electoral region of Glasgow and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament . In the parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007 , he ran for Glasgow Anniesland, but was only able to get the third highest number of votes in both cases. However, he moved back into parliament as a list candidate for the electoral region. In 2010 Aitken announced that it would not run for the next parliamentary elections. Aitken's successor in first place on the Glasgow regional electoral list was Ruth Davidson .
