Bruno Merk (born April 15, 1922 in Großkötz ; † March 13, 2013 in Günzburg ) was a German politician ( CSU ). Among other things, he was Minister of the Interior of Bavaria .

Life

In 1944, Merk lost his left arm as a company commander near Warsaw during World War II . After the war he studied law and political science in Munich , where he was awarded a Dr. jur. doctorate and entered the Bavarian civil service.

Merk was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament from 1958 to 1977 . From 1960 to 1966 he was District Administrator of the district of Günzburg and from December 5, 1966 to May 31, 1977 Bavarian Minister of the Interior in Alfons Goppel's cabinet . After leaving the state government, he was President of the Bavarian Savings Banks and Giro Association . From 1985 to 1990 he was President of the Bavarian Red Cross and from 1986 to 1991 a member of the Bavarian Senate . When Munich was taken hostage in 1972, Merk headed the crisis team and also offered himself as a substitute hostage . He was also the initiator of the regional reform in Bavaria .

Merk has been involved in the educational work of the Kolping Society for many years . On his 80th birthday, Ulm University awarded him the title of Honorary Senator. On this occasion he set up a foundation for political education as an endowment to the Kolping Foundation -Rudolf-Geiselberger . On his 90th birthday in 2012, he was honored with a ceremony in the Ministry of the Interior and in the Günzburg district.

Because of the leadership style of Prime Minister Horst Seehofer and the consent of the CSU to phase out nuclear power after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima , he left the CSU.
