Wolf Häfele (born April 15, 1927 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † June 5, 2013 in Essen ) was a German physicist . He is considered the "father" of the fast breeder in Germany.

Life

Häfele studied at the TH Munich from 1946 to 1950 and received his doctorate in theoretical physics in 1955 at the Max Planck Institute for Physics , which at the time was still in Göttingen. From 1956 to 1973 he worked at the nuclear research center in Karlsruhe , a. a. 1960 to 1972 as project manager for the fast breeder. From 1967 to 1972 he was an advisor to the federal government on questions of international control of fissile material. 1973 to 1980 he headed the Energy Systems project at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg near Vienna. 1974 to 1980 he was also the deputy director of this institute. From 1981 to 1983 he was a member of the Enquête Commission on Future Nuclear Energy Policy of the German Bundestag . Häfele has been honorary professor for reactor technology at the University of Karlsruhe since 1964 and for energy technology at the Vienna University of Technology since 1976 and honorary professor in Dresden since 1999.

From 1981 to 1990 he was chairman of the board of the former nuclear research facility Jülich eV (today Forschungszentrum Jülich ). In 1991 he became managing director of the former GDR Central Institute for Nuclear Research in Rossendorf. From 1992 to 1996 he was Scientific Director of the newly founded Research Center Rossendorf and Director of the Association for Nuclear Process Engineering and Analytics Rossendorf .

Memberships

Häfele had been a member of the Swedish Academy of Engineering since 1975 and of the US Academy of Engineering since 1977 . Since 1988 he has been a member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and since 1989 of the Finnish Academy of Technical Sciences . In 1995 he received an honorary doctorate from the TU Dresden . He was a member of the German Atomic Energy Forum and was the founder and first chairman of the Nuclear Technology Society from 1969 to 1973 , of which he was an honorary member for many years.

Awards

He was appointed Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques in 1972 and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class (1982) and the Great Federal Cross of Merit (1991) of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Cross of Honor for Art and Science 1st Class of the Republic of Austria (1983) .
