Walter Francis John Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 9th Duke of Buccleuch , KT (born September 28, 1923 in Westminster , † September 4, 2007 in Selkirk , Scottish Borders ) was a Scottish nobleman , politician and landowner.

Life

He was the only son of Walter Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 8th Duke of Buccleuch , and Mary Lascelles. As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title of Lord Eskdaill from 1926 to 1935 and that of Earl of Dalkeith from 1935 to 1973 . He attended Eton College and then studied at Christ Church College of Oxford University .

In 1953 he married Jane McNeill. The marriage has four children:

  • Richard Scott, 10th Duke of Buccleuch (* 1954),
  • Lord William Montagu-Douglas-Scott (* 1957),
  • Lady Charlotte-Anne Montagu-Douglas-Scott (* 1966),
  • Lord Damian Montagu-Douglas-Scott (* 1970).

In 1972 Scott had a riding accident in which he sustained a spine injury. After that he was dependent on the wheelchair.

When his father died on October 4, 1973, he inherited his title of nobility as 9th Duke of Buccleuch and 11th Duke of Queensberry and became hereditary chief of Clan Scott . His total estimated net worth was approximately £ 455 million, including £ 55 million personal wealth. This included in particular larger lands in Scotland and Northamptonshire with several castles and country houses. Scott was the largest private landowner in the United Kingdom .

He died on September 4, 2007 after a brief illness at his Bowhill House estate in Scotland.

Military career

He served in the Royal Naval Reserve from 1942 to 1971 . During the Second World War he was used on several sloops and frigates in the North Atlantic. Most recently he held the rank of Lieutenant Commander . In 1988 he was made Honorary Sea Captain of the Royal Naval Reserve.

He was Captain in the Royal Company of Archers and Silver Stick for Scotland.

Political career

He was a member of the County Council of Roxburghshire from 1958 and was from 1960 Conservative MP in the House of Commons for the constituency of Edinburgh- North. At times he was also the private parliamentary secretary of the Lord Advocate (Scottish attorney general with ministerial rank) and the Minister for Scotland. In 1973 he inherited his father's title of nobility. With these a seat in the House of Lords was connected until 1999 , which is why he left the House of Commons.

From 1974 to 1998 he was Lord Lieutenant of Roxburghshire. In 1978 he was accepted as a Knight Companion in the Thistle Order . From 1992 he was chancellor of this order. In 1992 he was awarded the Bledisloe Gold Medal by the Royal Agricultural Society of England .
