history

King Robert the Bruce donated the lands to the Scotts of Buccleuch in 1322 . In the early 18th century, the politician John Murray, Lord Bowhill bought the property. Around 1708 he had a Georgian villa built on the site. After Bowhill went to the Veitch family in the meantime , Francis Scott, 2nd Duke of Buccleuch bought the property back in 1747 for the Scotts. The aim was the political consolidation of the Scotts in the region. The first parks were developed during the century. It is said that Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch, had around 120 acres of forest planted by 1777  .

Charles Montagu-Scott, 4th Duke of Buccleuch , continued efforts. After Bowhill House had only been a small country villa up to that point, the Duke commissioned the English architect William Atkinson to expand it into a mansion around 1812 . William Burn redesigned Bowhill House in the early 1830s, and David Bryce in the mid 1870s . During the two world wars, Bowhill House served on the one hand as a military hospital and on the other as military accommodation. In the second half of the 20th century, the maintenance of the forests began. For this purpose, the Buccleuch Heritage Trust was founded in 1984 . As a result, the facility was opened to the public. The art collection includes works by Canaletto , Gainsborough and Reynolds , among others .
